Abstract & Lecture Content
The internal structures of super-Earths remain one of the biggest unknowns in exoplanet science. In this talk, I will present recent advances from state-of-the-art computational modeling that shed light on their composition, mineralogy, and thermophysical behavior under extreme conditions. These results provide new insights into how super-Earth interiors may differ from Earth’s and what this means for their evolution and potential habitability.

Jie Deng is an assistant professor of geophysics in Princeton University. He received his Ph.D. in geophysics from Yale University in 2019. After 3-year postdoc research at UCLA, he joined the Princeton Department of Geosciences in 2022. Jie currently heads the Computational Mineral Physics Laboratory and uses atomistic simulations, machine learning, and laboratory experiments to study material properties and key processes underlying the formation and evolution of planetary bodies, including phase transitions, element partitioning, and isotope fractionation.
