VIPS on the Moon and Mars - planning planetary missions to explore volcanic and igneous plumbing systems

Abstract

Traces of subvolcanic and igneous activity are recognized at the surface of the Moon and Mars in visual imagery and topographic data. Constraining the underlying volcanic and igneous plumbing systems (VIPS) is challenging, though, because we are limited to observing from orbit or robotic rover missions with a limited footprint. This talk will discuss cryptic volcanic landforms, such as putative intrusive domes and lunar irregular mare patches, and the most promising mission concepts currently in development to go explore VIPS in our Inner Solar System
