Das Center for Advanced Studies der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München versteht sich als Forum für den intensiven wissenschaftlichen Austausch über die etablierten Fächergrenzen hinweg. Mit seinen Aktivitäten fördert es verschiedenste Formen kooperativer Forschung sowie die interdisziplinäre Kommunikation innerhalb der Universität. Daneben unterstützt es die Einbindung von Gastwissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftlern in das akademische Leben der LMU.
Ute Frevert and Thomas Kohut approach from their respective disci plinary perspectives the concept of empathy, which has experienced a remarkable surge of popularization in recent years, in both public discourse and research. While Frevert analyzes empathy from the perspective of historical emotion research, Kohut, a historian with psychoanalytic training, is primarily concerned with the ambivalence of empathy. This ambivalence consists of an imaginative assumption of perspective on the one hand, and a supposed fusion, identification, and sympathy on the other. Both scholars are interested in the changing meaning of the concept from a historical point of view.
Ute Frevert ist Direktorin des Forschungsbereichs Geschichte der Gefühle am MPI für Bildungsforschung in Berlin und derzeit Visiting Fellow am CAS. Thomas Kohut ist Professor für Geschichte am Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts und derzeit Visiting Fellow am CAS.
