If early career researchers fantasise about potential futures in academia, the outlook is often quite pessimistic: It is a truism, or so it seems, that professorships are highly sought-after yet hard to get. While this is true, there is a career path for academics which is often ignored – mostly for lack of knowledge about the diverse system of universities beyond the traditional research universities. This blind spot is not surprising, given that a PhD is still most often awarded within research universities, and thus, contact with other higher education institutions is rare for PhD students.

This talk will provide insights into the opportunities offered by professorships outside research universities, the paths which can lead there and the differences in the job profile compared to “traditional” professorships. In addition, there will be ample opportunity to ask questions..
