Tasks and responsibilities

In our group at LMU Munich, we study the physics of living systems by combining theory, computer simulations, and microscopy. Our aim is to understand fundamental principles governing cellular behavior, such as a tradeoff between control and emergence, optimization of performance, or robustness.

During your thesis project, you will study driven, molecular systems with coarse-grained stochastic models based on master equations and Fokker-Planck equations. The goal is to uncover how robust adaptation of specific molecular structures depends on the maintenance of non-equilibrium conditions. Results will be compared with experimental data. Through this project, you will deepen your understanding of stochastic systems, thermodynamics, and control theory. Since we are an interdisciplinary group, you will benefit from close interaction with experimentalists and get a first-hand impression of laboratory work.

Requirements

  • First degree in physics
  • High motivation and commitment to achieving scientific excellence
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Helpful but not required is some experience biophysics or active matter physics and modeling of stochastic systems
