Tasks and responsibilities

In our group at LMU Munich, we study the physics of living systems by combining theory, computer simulations, and microscopy. Our aim is to understand fundamental principles governing cellular behavior, such as a tradeoff between control and emergence, optimization of performance, or robustness.

During your thesis project, you will study driven, molecular systems with coarse-grained stochastic models based on master equations and Fokker-Planck equations. The goal is to uncover how robust adaptation of specific molecular structures depends on the maintenance of non-equilibrium conditions. Results will be compared with experimental data. Through this project, you will deepen your understanding of stochastic systems, thermodynamics, and control theory. Since we are an interdisciplinary group, you will benefit from close interaction with experimentalists and get a first-hand impression of laboratory work.

  • First degree in physics
  • High motivation and commitment to achieving scientific excellence
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Helpful but not required is some experience biophysics or active matter physics and modeling of stochastic systems

You will be part of a young and highly motivated team of physicists and biologists belonging to different faculties of LMU Munich. Your PhD thesis is in theoretical physics/biophysics. We are committed to excellence, fairness, and hands-on education of students. Our laboratory is located next to the newly inaugurated campus of the life science branch of LMU which offers excellent technical facilities and many interaction possibilities, including the gene center, several Max-Planck-Institutes and the Helmholtz Centre. Greater Munich is home to several world-class universities and research institutes, creating a truly inspiring intellectual atmosphere. Situated on the foothills of the Alps, Munich is consistently ranked as one of the most vibrant and enjoyable cities in the world with an exceptionally quality of life.

The University of Munich is an equal opportunity employer. The university is interested in increasing the number of female faculty members and encourages women to apply.

This is a part-time job

People with disabilities who are equally as qualified as other applicants will receive preferential treatment.

Application documents should contain a CV, references, copies of your certificates and your Master’s or Bachelor’s thesis. Early applications are preferred. Please send your application documents via E-Mail.
