The Faculty of Medicine of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich and the Helmholtz Zentrum München - German Research Center for Environmental Health invite applications for a Professorship (W2) (5 years/tenure track) of Experimental Pneumology combined with the lead of a working group at the Institute of Lung Health and Immunity at Helmholtz Zentrum München commencing as soon as possible.

The professorship covers the discipline in every aspect of research and academic teaching.

The professorship is affiliated to the Institute of Experimental Pneumology at the University Hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich. At the same time the professorship will entail the lead of a working group at the Institute of Lung Health and Immunity at Helmholtz Zentrum München. The professorship is dedicated to research in lung and airway diseases. Applicants should have a strong track record for research in disease mechanisms leading to innovative therapeutic approaches and focus on immunologic pathomechanisms and their interaction with exogenous and environmental factors. Special consideration is given to scientists who have a strong basic research program that offers novel therapeutic approaches to chronic inflammatory or immunologic lung diseases and provide a link to key environmental triggers of such diseases. Translational research concepts, which can be carried out in cooperation with the clinical department of pneumology are specially valued. An additional focus should be on the development of novel technologies and new pathophysiologically relevant preclinical disease models. The professorship is intended to identify and validate treatable target structures, to develop innovative drugs for the treatment of lung diseases and their and associated sequels. Experience in the collaboration with pharmaceutical industry is welcome. Applicants are expected to strengthen interdisciplinary research consortia at LMU Munich. The professorship does not comprise clinical duties.

LMU Munich and Helmholtz Zentrum München seek to appoint a highly qualified junior academic to this professorship and, therefore, especially encourage early-career scholars to apply. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree and a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career. Several years of experience heading a research team are expected.

The future holder of this position will be appointed to LMU Munich as a university professor (pay grade W2) under the terms of a private-law contract and will be granted leave of absence in order to be employed by the Helmholtz Zentrum München as the lead of a working group at the Institute of Lung Health and Immunity.

The initial appointment will be for five years. After a minimum of three years it can be converted into a permanent position pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s performance in research and teaching as well as his or her personal aptitude and if all legal conditions are met.

Under the terms of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, in exceptional cases and subject to outstanding performance in research and teaching, the position may be converted from a W2 into a W3 Full Professorship at a later date.

Information regarding the scientific focus of the position can be obtained from Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Erika von Mutius, Helmholtz Zentrum München (appointments-hmgu@helmholtz-muenchen.de) or Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Behr, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (juergen.behr@med.uni-muenchen.de).
