The Schraml lab at the Biomedical Center (LMU Munich, Germany) is looking for a PhD student who shares our enthusiasm for dendritic cells and immune responses in early life.Dendritic cells (DCs) are key activators of immunity that in neonates are qualitatively distinct from adults. Why such age-dependent differences exist is unclear but newborn DCs are often considered underdeveloped or functionally immature. In contrast to this dogma, we have found that despite exhibiting age-dependent differences in cell function some DC subtypes in early life are fully competent to induce T cell responses (Papaioannou et al., Nature Communications, 2021). Allergic diseases often develop in early life and the incidence of childhood allergies continues to rise. DCs critically determine the outcome of allergen encounter. The candidate will investigate the influence of cytokine signals and early life microbial encounter on the ability of DCs to shape allergies and type II immune responses with age. The project is integrated into the Forschergruppe 2599.

Tasks and responsibilities

The applicant will use high dimensional single cell technologies (flow cytometry and transcriptomics), lineage specific knock out mice of cytokine signalling and in vivo models to gain mechanistic insights into the regulation of DC function with age.

Requirements

  • A team player with enthusiasm for dendritic cells and early life immunity- Proficiency in English is required
  • Expertise in flow cytometry, transcriptomics and/or working with mice is a plus
  • Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Immunology, Cell Biology, Biomedicine, Bioinformatics or the like.

Benefits

  • An enthusiastic international team
  • State of the art facilities
  • Offers to support compatibility of family and work
  • A diverse range of tasks
  • Position available immediately, salary based on German public service scale (TV-L).
