The Faculty of Biology invites applications for a Professorship (W2) (6 years/tenure track) of Microbiology commencing as soon as possible.

Applicants should have an outstanding research record in the fields of physiological and/or synthetic microbiology. The research of the professorship should contribute to a better understanding of the adaptation of bacterial model organisms or microbial communities (microbiome) to abiotic or biotic stress factors using molecular, cellular and/or systemic methods. Successful candidates will strengthen the interdisciplinary cooperation at the Faculty, especially in the research foci “Molecular Interactions of Organisms with their Environment” or “Synthetic Biology”. The establishment of internationally competitive extramurally funded research projects is expected. The Faculty of Biology is located in the Biozentrum of the High-Tech Campus Martinsried, together with other Life Sciences at LMU Munich, the Max-Planck-Society and the Helmholtz-Zentrum München. Within the Faculty of Biology core facilities for High-Performance Computing, Genomics, Bioanalytics, Electron Microscopy and Light Microscopy, Proteomics and Metabolomics are available.

Teaching in the Bachelor and Master programs, as well as participation in the teacher training program and minors in Biology at the Faculty of Biology is required.

LMU Munich seeks to appoint a highly qualified junior academic to this professorship and, therefore, especially encourages early-career scholars to apply. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree and a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career.

The initial appointment will be for six years. After a minimum of three years, it can be converted into a permanent position pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s performance in research and teaching as well as his or her personal aptitude and if all legal conditions are met.

Under the terms of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, in exceptional cases and subject to outstanding performance in research and teaching, the position may be converted from a W2 into a W3 Full Professorship at a later date.
