The chair for Statistics and Data Science in Social Sciences and the Humanities (SoDa) at the Institute for Statistics is recruiting one Student Assistant to support research in the „Transatlantic Privacy Perceptions“ project (TAPP). This international project surveys influential voices and experts in privacy about their attitudes, expectations, and concerns around current and future topics in digital and data privacy across time, countries, and sectors through a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods.

Tasks and responsibilities

The student assistant will mainly be supporting the quantitative research aspects of the project:
Tasks:

  • Finding and compiling relevant privacy websites and documents (academic, legal, political, media)
  • Finding names and affiliations of privacy experts within these websites & documentsThrough combination of systematic “manual” research and scraping / crawling / mining techniques
  • Saving these data in a systematic, easy-to-use table.

Requirements

  • Experience with web-scraping / text-mining techniques, ideally including named-entity recognition (e.g. with R/Python or through Java / GATE / Apache OpenNLP or similar)
  • Very good command of English and German (for identifying and working with German sources)• Reliability and ability to work & solve problems independently.

Beneficial:

  • Experience with NLP / computational text analysis (e.g. in R / Python)
  • Experience in analyzing Twitter data (e.g. Twitter analytics / API / social listening tools)
