Scheherazade, the narrator of Arabian Nights, surprises, outwits, subdues, survives and convinces her cruel husband, King Shahryār, who has sworn to kill every woman he marries immediately after the wedding night. She does so by interrupting the stories she tells him each night at the most exciting moment.

But how exactly does she handle this trick? And how is it enshrined in the different Arabic versions of the world-famous collection of folk tales? Claudia Ott, freelance translator, musician and Honorary Professor at the University of Göttingen, is currently engaged in a German Research Foundation (DFG) project studying the “Philologies of Adventure” in her capacity as a Mercator Fellow.

A lecture by Claudia Ott (University of Göttingen/LMU Munich) in the series "Cultures of Islam: Current Research", organized by the Münchner Mittelost-Mittelmeer-Mittelasien-Zentrum, 4MZ (Munich Middle East Central Asia Center).

This event will be held in German. Find more information on the Website of the Institute for the Near and Middle East.
