Supervision

A constructive supervisory relationship with clearly defined rights and obligations for all parties involved can contribute significantly to the success of a doctoral project. Through information and discussion forums, workshops, and guidelines, we promote a constructive culture of supervision at LMU—one characterized by transparency, mutual respect, and trust.

Code of Practice

The recommendations for structuring the doctoral phase — the Code of Practice — outline common principles designed to help you establish supervision relationships that are transparent and results-oriented.

Supervision agreement

The supervision agreement defines key aspects of the collaboration between doctoral candidates and supervisors — from supervision and qualification goals to communication channels and timelines. It clarifies mutual expectations and serves as the foundation for reliable and constructive supervision.
In some departments or doctoral programs, signing a supervision agreement is mandatory, while in others it is voluntary. Where no corresponding template is available, the draft provided here can be used and adapted to individual circumstances (a Word version can be requested from us).

Events

Successful supervision thrives on good communication and mutual understanding. Our offerings and events (e.g., workshops, podcasts, and peer-to-peer formats) support you in addressing expectations, roles, and dynamics within the supervisory relationship. You will receive guidance on how to actively shape your doctoral studies, use feedback constructively, and foster a positive working relationship with your supervisor.
