The chair, now referred to as the "Chair of Neuro-Cognitive Psychology (NCP)," was originally named the "Chair of General and Experimental Psychology," which has a significant historical legacy within the department. The chair was first held by Karl Stumpf and subsequently by notable figures such as Theodor Lipps, Oswald Külpe, Wolfgang Prinz, and Hermann J. Müller, among others. Since 2025, this chair has been led by Professor Melissa Võ.
We are a diverse, international group of scientists of all academic career levels with interdisciplinary research expertise and united by the hunger to learn more about the mind and brain, particularly how we perceive, attend and interact with our visual environment. To still that hunger, we have equipped our labs with modern facilities for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), multimodal (visual, acoustic, haptic) psychophysics, measurement of eye and hand movements, electroencephalogram (EEG) recording, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at the Neuroimaging Core Unit Munich (NICUM).
In addition to cutting-edge research, we offer a variety of opportunities for students at all academic levels (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.) to broaden their theoretical knowledge regarding contemporary approaches and theories in the field of neuro-cognitive psychology (particularly in the areas of perception, attention, memory, executive functions, and performance) and moreover gain practical, hands-on experience with state-of-the-art neuro-cognitive methods. For example, students can participate in ongoing research projects through structured project seminars, lab internships, and as paid student research assistants. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to present their work during our poster presentation events and by participating in academic conferences. Additionally, we actively promote and facilitate international student exchange initiatives, such as those organized through the ERASMUS program, as well as internships in our esteemed international partner laboratories.
This unit serves as a central hub for an international Master of Science (M.Sc.) program in "Neuro-Cognitive Psychology (NCP)." Additionally, it participates in the Munich Neuroscience Network, particularly in the "Munich Center for Neurosciences," the "Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences," and the Neuroimaging Core Unit Munich (NICUM).
