The boundaries between the sciences and philological traditions have historically been far more intertwined than modern disciplinary divisions suggest. This is the central claim renowned scholars Lorraine Daston (Berlin) and Glenn W. Most (Pisa) made ten years ago in their landmark conceptual paper "History of Science and History of Philologies." The paper identifies shared scholarly practices that cut across different scientific fields, and calls for a more global, comparative history of knowledge beyond Western traditions.
To mark this anniversary, Daston and Most will reflect on the paper's legacy, impact, and implications for current and future research on the interconnections of science and philology in a lively panel discussion, moderated by Kärin Nickelsen, Professor for the History of Science at LMU Munich.
