Close reading can take different forms. One of them is translating, that is, transposing a text with its implicit context from one language medium into another one. This process requires, if the text is not simply taken as a piece of information, a form of what could be termed “thick understanding” (in analogy of Clifford Geertz’s “thick description”).

In his lecture on Thursday, July 16, Hans-Jörg Rheinberger will expose some of its aspects on the example of his translations of texts by Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, and Gaston Bachelard.
Warm invitation!
