Structure, leadership & representation

As an interdisciplinary institution of LMU Munich, we are governed by a Scientific Board, and award an internationally recognized Ph.D. degree independent of the traditional faculty structure of the universities. Students may carry out research with faculty members at LMU Munich, Technical University of Munich, Helmholtz Institutes and Max Planck Institutes.

Our governance structure combines:

The Scientific Board, comprising senior researchers from participating institutions, supports the strategic and academic development of the GSN. It advises on research priorities, training concepts, and quality assurance.

The Spokesperson, Prof. Laura Busse, provides academic leadership for the graduate school and represents it internally and externally. Together with the Scientific Board, she shapes the strategic direction of the programs, ensures high scientific standards, and fosters collaboration across participating institutions.

The Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) supports transparent supervision structures, ensures regular progress evaluations, and helps maintain high standards in doctoral training. The TAC also provides guidance on professional development, networking, and future career steps.

The Ombudsperson serves as an independent and confidential contact for students and faculty in cases of conflict or concerns related to supervision, working conditions, or academic conduct.

The Women’s Representative advocates and advises on matters related to gender equity, work-life balance, and inclusive working environments within GSN.

Student Representatives help shape community initiatives, and provide a channel for students to raise ideas, concerns, and feedback on the programs.

The GSN Team keeps the GSN running: from admissions and program coordination to regulatory compliance, student counselling, and everything in between.
