Student-organized exchange program between Jimma University and LMU Munich
Since 2002, the JU-LMU Exchange Program has been promoting bilateral exchange between Jimma University (Ethiopia) and LMU Munich. Supported by the Center for International Health (CIH), the program enables medical students from both universities to gain in-depth, practice-oriented experience in pediatrics and gynecology—each in the context of a different healthcare system.
What makes the program special
The JU-LMU Exchange is not organized top-down, but by students for students. From the outset, the focus is on mutual learning, cultural exchange, and participatory cooperation— without any paternalistic development rhetoric.
Our focus areas
Clinical internships in gynecology and pediatrics
Intercultural dialogue on equal terms
Establishment of a global network of young medical professionals
Promotion of long-term personal and professional relationships
The exchange program stands for low-threshold, partnership-based cooperation in the global context of medical education. Students organize all program elements independently—from application and planning to implementation.
In the past, there have been isolated cases of financial bottlenecks, for example due to advance payments for accommodation for JU students. A donation account was set up to bridge these gaps. The funds are used exclusively to cover payment deadlines before the Erasmus+ scholarship is received.
