What remains - Reports from students from previous years
In brief testimonials, participants from past JU-LMU exchange cohorts share their very personal impressions from Jimma and Munich. What moved them, what they took away – and why the exchange shapes them far beyond the academic aspects.
This semester our LMU students spent a month at Jimma University in April and May, whilst our guest students from JU visited us from June to July. Our report can be read below.
In this winter term, the JU students visited Munich first from october to december. After christmas, the LMU students departed for Jimma and spend about a month in the JUMC (Jimma University Medical Center). Their report can be read below.
2023
For this summer term, we tried something new. First, eight LMU students visited Jimma University Medical Center from April 15th to May 14th 2023. Only after their visit did the JU students come to Munich. They arrived on May 28th and stayed for two months. You can read their report down below.
This years exchange has been organized by the exchange students themselves. On October 14th, the LMU students welcomed seven students from Jimma University, who are have the chance to discover the departments of gynecology, pediatrics, orthopedics and visceral surgery. On fridays, they visited other departments such as neurosurgery, radiology or anesthesiolgy. After two months, the JU students returned to Jimma on December 13th. The LMU students started their journey on December 28th and returned 4 weeks later, just in time to pass their M5 exams. Their report can be downloaded below.
We are so happy to announce that the first post-pandemic personal JU-LMU Exchange did take place! Eight students from Jimma University visited Munich from April 25th to June 25th 2022. In the hospital, they attached gynecology/obstetrics and orthopedics/traumatology. On Fridays, they visited other departments, such as neurosurgery or ENT. After weekly preparation meetings, eight students from LMU did in exchange visit the Jimma University Medical Center to attach gynecology/pediatrics for Modul 5 from June 17th to July 17th 2022. One student did a part of her surgical internship (PJ) in Jimma from June 26th to August 19th 2022. Their reports can be downloaded below.
This years digital JU-LMU Exchange took place from January until April. There were 12 meetings, each with a different topic about "Diseases in a globalized world", for example planetary health or Covid-19. Each meeting consisted of a short case presentation from two students, followed by a discussion with an invited expert. In the schedule, you can see in detail which expert was invited for which topic.
The first digital exchange took place from May to June 2021 and included 8 meetings with case presentation about the following topics, each with a presentation from either LMU or JU:
obstruced labour and uterine rupture, severe acute malnutrution, rheumatic valvular heart disease (JU)
tumor orthopedics, palliative care, patient safety and Critical Incident Reporting System (LMU)
Furthermore, we had one meeting dedicated to intercultural communication with a workshop hosted by Marie Rausch from the Institute for Medical Education at LMU.

2019 / 2020
Eight students from Jimma completed their internship in Munich from October to December 2019. From December to January 2020, six students from LMU visited the Jimma University Medical Center for their gyne/obs or pediatric course.
