LMU-NYU Research Cooperation Program

The LMU-NYU Research Cooperation Program was established in 2017 and extended in 2022 to promote and support research collaboration between LMU Munich and New York University (NYU).

The LMU-NYU partnership is open to all disciplines and supports joint research projects, workshops, symposia, conferences, visiting professorships to LMU, as well as research stays for early-career researchers.

As part of a competitive application process, faculty members at New York University and LMU Munich (principal investigators, or PIs) are eligible to submit joint proposals.

Collaborators from other institutions besides NYU and LMU, subject to an appropriate balance between internal and external researchers, are eligible to participate in projects but are not eligible for any financial support from NYU or LMU. Kindly note that individuals from NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine and the Long Island School of Medicine (including NYU Langone Health) are not eligible to apply for funding. However, faculty from these Schools are eligible to host eligible PhD students and Postdocs from LMU.

An overview of the research activities (research projects and research conferences) funded under the LMU-NYU Research Cooperation Program from 2024 to 2026 can be found here.

Further information with regard to networking

LMU Munich is associate supporter in the German Center for Research and Innovation New York (DWIH) with which LMU Munich has the opportunity to apply for event funding of up to 5,000 euros (in the U.S., especially East Coast). Interested LMU faculty members are invited to contact Juliane Gierach for more information about the application process and funding criteria, as the application must be submitted through LMU’s DWIH New York contact person. Please also consult details given here.

The DWIH focus topic 2025 is Global Health. Research activities dealing with Global Health will therefore have priority in 2025. The DWIH New York publishes a monthly newsletter; to subscribe please click here.

For more information on cultural initiatives at NYU and in New York City, please consult the Deutsches Haus at NYU which also publishes a regular newsletter. The Deutsches Haus at NYU can also be approached by LMU faculty members for assistance in finding a room for a workshop/symposium. In addition, Deutsches Haus at NYU invites DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) visiting scholars of all academic disciplines on a regular basis.

In addition, we would like to inform you about the BayIntAn - Promoting Cooperation of the Bavarian Research Alliance. Within the framework of this initial support for international research cooperation, you can apply for reimbursement of travel expenses for a maximum of 21 days (outside Europe) up to a maximum of 10,000 euros. Further information may be found here.

In the transatlantic context, you can also contact the Bavarian-California University Center (BaCaTeC) for projects in California, which typically publishes a call for project funding (max. 20,000 euros) twice a year. The deadline is generally 15 April and 15 October. Further details can be found on the BaCaTec website.

If you have any questions regarding the LMU funding or the above-mentioned network initiatives, please contact the team International Networks by email via network.international@lmu.de.
