LMU-Stellenbosch University (SU) Research Cooperation Program

The LMU-SU partnership is open to all disciplines and supports joint research and partnership development projects, workshops, conferences, as well as mobility opportunities for early-career researchers and professors.

Call for Applications

For the 2027 funding period, researchers from LMU and Stellenbosch University are invited to submit joint applications for funding within the LMU–SU Research Cooperation Program.

Funding is available for joint research activities, including research projects, workshops and conferences, as well as individual mobility. Applications may request funding of up to €25,000 for the funding period from January 1 to December 31, 2027.

Eligible applicants are researchers holding a doctoral degree who are employed at LMU or Stellenbosch University. Doctoral candidates are not eligible to apply as Principal Investigators (PIs) but are expressly encouraged to participate in the projects.

The application process for the 2027 funding period is expected to open in September 2026. Further information on the call and application process will be published on this website in the coming weeks.

LMU–SU Networking Week

An LMU–SU Networking Week is held annually as part of the funded research projects. The event brings together funded researchers from different disciplines and is hosted alternately by LMU and Stellenbosch University. It aims to promote interdisciplinary and international exchange, strengthen connections among the funded projects, and generate new ideas and opportunities for further collaboration.

Information on Further Funding Opportunities

In addition to funding available through the LMU–SU Research Cooperation Program, researchers may consider BayIntAn – Promoting Cooperation, a funding program of the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) that supports the development of international research collaborations.
Within the framework of this initial funding for international research cooperation, eligible travel expenses of up to €10,000 may be reimbursed. Further information on the funding conditions and application process is available on the Bavarian Research Alliance website.
