Fifteen LMU scientists and academics feature in the latest Highly Cited Researchers 2022 analysis of publications, recognizing them as among the most successful in their field. The analysis divides publications into 21 fields and one interdisciplinary category and assigns the cited researchers to these rubrics accordingly.

Among the world’s most highly cited physicists is Professor Immanuel Bloch (Chair of Experimental Physics – Quantum Optics and Speaker of the Cluster of Excellence MCQST). Bloch has already been named a Clarivate Citation Laureate this year for his pioneering research in the field of quantum simulation. Also named in this category was Professor Stefan A. Maier (Chair of Experimental Physics – Hybrid Nanosystems).

Professor Nadia Harbeck (Head of Breast Center, Oncological Therapy and Breast Clinical Trials Unit at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Munich Hospital) was ranked among the world’s most highly cited researchers in the Clinical Medicine category.

The Cross-Field category honors researchers who have published outstanding work in several fields. This year’s list includes Professor Thomas Bein (Chair of Physical Chemistry – Physical Chemistry and Nanoscience, Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy) and Professor Christian Haass (Chair of Metabolic Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine and member of the Cluster of Excellence SyNergy). In addition, four researchers who are resident at the University of Munich Hospital were named in this category: Professor Hans-Joachim Anders (Department of Internal Medicine IV), Professor Martin Dichgans (Director of the Institute for Stroke and Dementia Research and member of the Cluster of Excellence SyNergy), Professor Christian Weber (Director of the Institute for Cardiovascular Prevention (IPEK)), and Professor Andreas Wollenberg (Department of Dermatology and Allergology).

In the Immunology field, Professor Veit Hornung (Chair of Immunobiochemistry, Gene Center at LMU) and Professor Christoph Klein (Director of Pediatric Clinic and Polyclinic, Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital at LMU in Munich) were ranked among the most highly cited researchers.

Professor Peter G. Falkai (Director of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at University of Munich Hospital) was named in the Psychiatry and Psychology field.

An LMU researcher is also represented in the Neuroscience and Behavior category in the person of Professor Walter Paulus (Department of Neurology at University of Munich Hospital).

In the Social Sciences category, Professor Eva Annette Rehfuess (Chair of Public Health and Health Services Research, Faculty of Medicine) made the list.

About the ranking

The list of Highly Cited Researchers 2022 comprises some 7,200 academics and scientists in total. It is issued by the American company Clarivate Analytics. Analysis is based on the so-called Web of Science, which tabulates all citations in research publications. The more frequently a researcher’s publications are cited, the higher the significance and quality of the research are ranked. All research articles published over the past eleven years are included in the analysis. For the current list, publications from the period 2011 to 2021 were taken into account. However, the final evaluation is based solely on publications that are among the top one percent with the most citations in the 21 specialist fields and the interdisciplinary category (highly cited papers).
