Pinelopi Goldberg: The Changing Nature of Globalization and its Implications for Development

Global trade continues to flourish, yet its nature has significantly changed in recent years. The changes are both structural-driven by advancements in automation, artificial intelligence, and the impacts of climate change and policy-driven, influenced by increasing geopolitical fragmentation, national security concerns, the resurgence of industrial policies, and growing awareness of trade's distributional, social, and environmental impacts.

This year's Distinguished CES Fellow, Professor Pinelopi Goldberg (Elihu Professor of Economics and Global Affairs at Yale University, USA) will explore the question, what these changes mean for economic development, reviewing in the process the primary channels through which international trade has historically promoted development. Special attention will be given to missing markets and other market failures specific to low- and middle-income countries.
