LMU’s University Library is celebrating its 550th anniversary in 2023. Since its inception in 1473, countless developments have shaped the history of the library at the oldest state university in Bavaria.
The exhibition draws on selected artifacts to highlight the long and illustrious history of the University Library. Catalogues from the Late Medieval and Early Modern periods, for example, recall the beginnings of the artists’ faculty library in Ingolstadt. Holdings acquired during secularization and others that were coveted during its time in Landshut testify to the library’s rapid growth at the dawn of the 19th century.
The move to Munich to become the biggest such library in Germany in the first half of the 20th century is illustrated by regulations for library users, accounting records and lecture notes. The National Socialist era and the destruction of buildings and inventories during World War II were followed by old and new construction projects, leading into the modern history of the University Library.
