Archeology in Munich

Opening hours / Beginning:

18 May 2022 - 31 October 2022

Venue:

Munich city center

As part of the “Munich Archeology” project under the aegis of the Archeological Collection of the Bavarian State, a fourth pop-up exhibition will be presented in the center of Munich from 18 May to 31 October 2022. Under the heading “Archeology For All”, archeological finds will be on display at special places around the Bavarian capital. The city itself will become a window on local archeological treasures.

More than 250 excavations have already been completed in the old town center alone. To make the finds and the associated knowledge available to as many people as possible, the most exciting artifacts are regularly put on show at various places around the city center. In recent years, a number of shops and stores have also taken part in the exhibition project. Depending on their location and thematic frame of reference, the city’s shop windows have thus been chosen specifically to give an insight into everyday life, the environment and the cityscape of Munich dating back to the Middle Ages.

This year’s exhibition centers around finds from excavation work on the Marienhof in 2011/12, plus other discoveries from around the old town. The items on display will include religious artifacts such as statues of saints and paternoster beads, the predecessors of the rosaries that are more common today. Ecclesiastical items will be displayed in the Frauenkirche cathedral. The recent reopening of the cathedral’s southern tower means that visits can ideally be combined with access to the pop-up exhibition.

Another focus, in keeping with our times, is the subject of “Health”. The Kranich, Rathaus and Apotheke im Tal pharmacies are all involved and will be displaying finds such as ointment pots and bottles for oils and tinctures, as well as receptacles for distilling and for cosmetics. Since plastics did not yet exist in times past, glass, wood and clay were used as packaging materials.
