Introduction: Professor Philipp Schorch (Social and Cultural Anthropology, LMU)

In Manfred Mayerle's multifaceted body of work, lines, structures and colors become independent means of expression. Through the repetition of freehand lines, his mostly small-format drawings morph into a variety of grids, patterns and interwoven structures. The series “Out of the Box” is a good example, with complex graphic structures taking shape on unfolded cardboard packaging. These works are juxtaposed with large-scale, abstract and often monochromatic paintings whose numerous layers of paint and glazes create a distinctive sense of depth. The exhibition provides an overview of Mayerle's different bodies of work and creative periods.

Manfred Mayerle studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1959 to 1964 under Josef Oberberger, Hermann Kaspar and Anton Marxmüller. Since 1970, he has lived and worked as an independent artist in Munich and Mallorca.

Philipp Schorch is Professor of Museum Anthropology at LMU, where he leads the ERC project “Indigeneities in the 21st Century.” He is also an Honorary Senior Research Associate at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on museums, material culture, contemporary art and (post)colonial history.

Since 2008, rotating art exhibitions have been held at CAS in cooperation with UniGalerieLMU.

Prior registration is required. Further information is available on the Center for Advanced Studies website.

This vernissage is part of the exhibition “Manfred Mayerle – Out of the Box”, which will be on display at the Center for Advanced Studies from 22 October 2026 to 15 March 15 2027.

The Center for Advanced Studies at LMU Munich serves as a forum for intensive academic dialogue across established disciplinary boundaries. Through its activities, it promotes various forms of collaborative research and interdisciplinary communication within the university. It also supports the integration of visiting scholars in the academic life of LMU.
