Mushroom clouds assume an overwhelming, almost exalted appearance of disconcerting beauty. Yet they are also the visible signature of a deadly reality: the ability of the human race to annihilate itself. Pictures of mushroom clouds are created using technical apparatus. As such, they are both historical documents and media creations, vacillating in the space between evidence and illusion. In his artistic oeuvre, Olaf Probst explores the relationship between language, writing, text and visual form. Drawing on the motif of the mushroom cloud, he shows how images become texts and texts become images.

Olaf Probst studied under Rudolf Schoofs, Sotirios Michou and Jürgen Brodwolf at the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts. He lives and works in Munich.

The vernissage will be introduced by Juliane Prade-Weiss, Professor of General and Comparative Literature at LMU.

Temporary art exhibitions have been presented on the CAS premises in collaboration with UniGalerieLMU since 2008.

Prior registration is required. For more information, please visit the CAS website.
