Power and influence in the village: The everyday life of Egyptian peasants
In the pre-modern era, the vast majority of the population lived in villages, where the authors whose books are known to this day were less important than … than who, in fact? Who was it that shaped the life of rural populations?
This lecture immerses us in an almost unknown world: Original Arabic documents describe a village in Egypt’s Fayyum basin around the year 1000: Who pursued what occupations? Who earned their money how? And who was in charge?
The lecture will be presented by Professor Andreas Kaplony (LMU Munich) as part of the series Basics of Islam: Personalities organized by the Münchner Mittelost-Mittelmeer-Mittelasien-Zentrum (4MZ, Munich Middle East Mediterranean Central Asia Center).
