Opening hours / Beginning:

The Center for Advanced Studies at LMU provides a forum for scientific exchange and discussion that bridges the divide between the established disciplines. Its activities are designed to promote all forms of collaborative research and to stimulate interdisciplinary communication within the University. In addition, it facilitates the integration of visiting scholars and scientists into the academic life of the University.

In the early 1990s, hopes for the eastward spread of liberal democracy were high. And yet the transformation of Eastern European countries gave rise to a bitter repudiation of liberalism itself, not only there, but also back in the heartland of the West. The book The Light that Failed has provoked immense attention – within the scientific com- munity as well as in reviews and public debates. Its authors, Ivan Krastev and Stephen Holmes, will discuss their main propositions with the historian Michael Kimmage: The supposed end of commun ism turned out to be only the beginning of the age of the autocrat, and the most powerful force behind the wave of populist xenophobia that began in Eastern Europe stems from resentment against the post1989 imperative to become westernized.

Stephen Holmes is professor at the NYU School of Law. Michael Kimmage is professor for History at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Ivan Krastev is the leader of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia.

Die Veranstaltung wird auf Englisch gehalten. Weitere Informationen erhalten Sie auf der Webseite des CAS.
