Causes and effects of the earthquakes of 06.02.2023 in Southeast Anatolia (Turkey, Syria)

Researchers from the Department of Geology present geological information and new geophysical-geodetic measurements collected since the occurrence of the two earthquakes on February 6. They provide insights into ongoing analyses of such data and explain the geological conditions that exist when large earthquakes occur.

The ruptures underlying the magnitude 7.8 and 7.7 earthquakes displaced the earth's surface by many meters and the quake waves caused the collapse of thousands of buildings, triggering a humanitarian disaster that killed tens of thousands of people.

After the presentation of the results by the experts there is the possibility to ask questions. Earthquakes are demonstrated experimentally. Earthquake rocks will be available.

Admission is free of charge. The event will be held in German and English. You can find more information on the chair's website.

The event is supported by the Münchener Universitätsgesellschaft.
