Concert of Beethoven’s late works

Opening hours / Beginning:

Fri:
7:00 pm

27 May 2022

Venue:

Great Aula, LMU Munich Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1

Even for Munich’s eclectic concert scene, this is a first! In the Great Aula at LMU Munich, the Institute of Musicology proudly presents Ludwig van Beethoven’s four last major piano compositions – for the first time in the sound they were intended for: The works will be interpreted with the marvelously rich sound of the institute’s fortepiano, whose hammers hit the strings from above. This unique instrument was built in Vienna around 1825 by Beethoven’s friend Nanette Streicher.

Two outstanding pianists will play at the concert: Tobias Koch, whose various Beethoven and Schubert concerts on this grand piano at LMU have already drawn acclaim, and Dmitry Ablogin, a rising star of the international piano scene who won the International German Pianist Prize in Frankfurt in October 2021. This illustrious duo will play Beethoven’s profoundly moving cycle of piano sonatas in E major (Op. 109), A major (Op. 110) and C minor (Op. 111), in addition to the 33 variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli in C major (Op. 120).

While admission is free, the organizers will be asking for donations at the exit to fund the concert. All donations above and beyond the amount needed to cover costs will be passed on to the solidarity campaign launched by the Department of History at LMU’s Faculty of History and the Arts for academics from Ukraine.

Please note that FFP2 (N95) masks must be worn in LMU’s main building. For more information about the concert, please visit the Institute of Musicology’s website.
