Talk by Gabriele von Arnim as part of the Erika Mann Lecture Series on the topic of “response-ability.”
Gabriele von Arnim was born in Hamburg in 1946 and currently lives in Berlin. She studied, earned her doctorate and lived in New York for ten years, working as a freelance journalist. She later wrote for publications such as Die Zeit and Süddeutsche Zeitung and hosted television and radio programs. Her numerous works include “Life Is a Transient Condition,” “The Consolation of Beauty,” and „Liebe Enkel oder die Kunst der Zuversicht“ (“Dear Grandchildren, or The Art of Optimism”; not yet available in English).
Von Arnim will reflect on the concept of “response-ability” and ask what it means to be a citizen in the present day. How do we stay hopeful? How do we practice optimism?
The Erika Mann Lecture Series showcases authors whose works make significant contributions to topical societal issues and who, like Erika Mann, demonstrate an unwavering clarity of vision that is profoundly inspiring. As an author, journalist, cabaret artist, racing driver, globetrotter and fashion icon, Erika Mann was far ahead of her time. Courageous, creative, progressive and unambiguously outspoken, she and her works remain a source of inspiration to this day.
Admission is free. Prior registration is required. For more information and the complete program, please visit the Erika Mann Lecture website.
