Elisabeth Schneidhuber (1914–1984) earned a doctorate to successfully complete her studies of medicine at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich in 1939. Initially, however, she was not awarded a doctoral degree certificate. The reason? On her mother’s side, she was a descendent of the Wassermanns, a Munich-based Jewish family.
Elisabeth Schneidhuber is the focal point of an exhibition presented here by the University Library’s Archive Department and the Institut für zukunftsweisende Geschichte e. V. (Institute of Forward-Thinking History).
The example of Schneidhuber’s family brings the varying fortunes of Jewish people under National Socialism sharply into focus: Elisabeth herself emigrated to the USA, where she worked as a doctor. Her mother and grandmother survived the Theresienstadt Ghetto. Her Uncle Paul was deported to Kaunas and murdered there.
Alongside historical documents from the University archive, numerous documents that until recently were in the possession of the family in the USA will also be on display.
