After the end of the war, when LMU Munich resumed its lecturing activities in 1946, the challenges facing the University’s administrators, professors and students alike were tremendous: Many University buildings were damaged. Living space and food were in short supply for all concerned. And there was a need to analyze the country’s National Socialist past – although critical reflection, too, was lacking on some counts.
Reconstruction, dealing with shortages, denazification and the work of remembrance are the topics addressed by this exhibition, which was put together by LMU students in collaboration with pupils at the Lise-Meitner-Gymnasium in Unterhaching under the guidance of the Chair of Historical Didactics and Public History and the University Archive.
The exhibition is part of a program entitled “1945 | 2025 – Zero hour? How we became what we are”, organized by the City of Munich’s Department of Culture to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the war.
