Following a successful debut at the Bavarian State Collection of Antiques in Munich (November 2022 – April 2023), the special exhibition devised by Professor Ruth Bielfeldt (Classical Archeology) is now on show at the Capitoline Museums in Rome.

This exhibition of the German Research Foundation (DFG) funded research project New Light from Pompeii invites visitors to see what is no longer visible: light from the past. For the first time, systematic and interdisciplinary research has paved the way to an in-depth exhibition of the technology, esthetics and atmosphere of artificial lighting in Roman times.

The LMU exhibition “Nuova Luce da Pompei a Roma” will display 150 original bronze artefacts from Pompeii, including oil lamps, lampstands and lamp holders with figurative representations, alongside cast reproductions and a virtual triclinium featuring a lighting simulation – all providing a fresh insight into everyday life in Rome.

Curated by: Professor Ruth Bielfeldt & Dr. Johannes Eber
