Munich in full bloom: With one voice, Gasteig, Kunsthalle München, the Botanical Garden and BIOTOPIA are invoking a citywide festival in celebration of the flower in 2023
Celebrate nature in the city. This will be the motto of the Flower Power Festival Munich 2023, scheduled to run from 3 February to 7 October 2023. Following on from the Faust Festival, which raised eyebrows nationwide in 2018, this will be the second major event in the Bavarian capital to welcome the participation of one and all: large institutions, small clubs, respected cultural facilities, well-known parks, private initiatives, you name it. The point of departure will be the exhibition Flowers Forever. Blumen in Kunst und Kultur (Flowers Forever. Flowers in Art and Culture) at Kunsthalle München from 3 February to 9 July 2023.
Ideas welcome!
Gasteig (Europe’s biggest cultural center), the Botanical Garden München-Nymphenburg, BIOTOPIA (Bavaria’s Natural History Museum) and Kunsthalle München jointly initiated the festival, which captured the imagination of numerous partners even from the very earliest preparatory phase. Many actors clearly identify with the message of nature, culture, flowers and the city – the core idea of the festival. And there are no limits to participants’ creativity.
Everything will – literally, but also figuratively speaking – revolve around flowers at the Flower Power Festival Munich 2023. Science, sustainability, plant diversity, garden artwork, climate change, biodiversity, esthetics, quality of life: All these concepts and many more besides can be incorporated in the festival, be it through exhibitions, workshops, walking tours, theater productions, art installations, whatever. And the festival’s venue? Indoors, outdoors and the digital realm.
Get involved: Collect and dry flowers
Even those who are not part of a club or organization and who may feel they have no ideas or nothing to contribute can get involved – for example by joining in with one absolutely unique project: British artist Rebecca Louise Law needs no fewer than 200,000 dried flowers for her installation Blütenboden (Floor of Flowers), which, starting on February 3, 2023, is sure to be a highlight of the “Flowers Forever” exhibition at Kunsthalle München. For this she has requested the commitment and assistance of locals in collecting and drying flowers, thereby becoming part of this large-scale community project. Flowers can be handed into Kunsthalle München from 25 March until fall 2022.

LMU maintains close links with the Botanical Garden München-Nymphenburg and the Botanische Staatssammlung München (State Botanical Collection in Munich). Our collaboration dates back to approx. 1820 and was initiated by the naturalist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, the first Professor of Botany at LMU. Von Martius also headed the two above-named institutions. Today, Professor Gudrun Kadereit is Director of the Botanical Collection and Head of the Botanical Garden. She also holds the Chair of Systematics, Biodiversity and the Evolution of Plants.
