From research to application – How trusted technologies change our life

The world is ever more closely interconnected. People pay by smartphone in shops. Satnav apps know the traffic situation in real time. Streaming services recommend the next favorite series. All these devices share data and make decisions – in many cases without any human intervention. If they are to work reliably and securely, people need trust in digital technologies. Modern platform chips – the “brains” of connected systems – play a key role in this process. It is they that determine what devices can do, how secure they are and how quickly new research ideas find their way into everyday life.

But how do these technologies emerge in the first place? And how so scientific insights become things that improve people's life?

This is precisely the subject of tonight’s event in the Let’s talk series. Gerhard Fettweis will begin the evening with insights into his work as a researcher, company founder and university lecturer. He will talk about current developments surrounding trusted connected systems, microelectronics and the next generation of mobile communications.

Next, research takes a hands-on turn: Numerous interactive stations will allow visitors to try out the latest technologies – including a robotic dog that responds to bodily gestures, secure platform chips whose operation is explained in a playful format, and a smart pacemaker that demonstrates security challenges in today’s connected world. Direct dialogue with experts from the Barkhausen Institute, TU Dresden and TU Munich will illustrate how ideas become our future.

Participants:

  • Professor Gerhard Fettweis, Vodafone Chair of Mobile Communication Systems at TU Dresden, founding Director of the Barkhausen Institute and winner of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities’ 2025 Pioneer Award
  • Researchers from Professor Fettweis’s team at the Barkhausen Institute and at TU Dresden

With the kind support of the chairs of Professor Gerhard Kramer (Communication Systems, TU Munich), Professor Wolfgang Utschick (Signal Processing Methods, TU Munich) and Professor John S Thompson (University of Edinburgh)

Moderation: Andrea Lauterbach, science journalist and moderator at Bavarian broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk

Prior registration is required. For more information about the event, please visit the website of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
