„Wann du ein Roß anfahen wilt in die Chur zu nehmen / so bedencke dich recht unnd wol / daß du deine Sachen also anstellest / damit du nicht in einem oder dem andern zu viel / oder zu wenig thust."

These are the words – penned in antiquated German – with which veterinary horse specialist Martin Böhme began the therapeutic section of his 17th-century work. He lived and worked in what, in veterinary circles, was known as the Stallmeisterzeit (the Stable Master Period, from 1250 to 1762), a roughly 500-year epoch predating the commencement of modern veterinary education. At this time, “stable masters” were responsible for keeping the horses in their care healthy. They would then pass their knowledge on to the following generation.

At the exhibition “A glance over the stable master’s shoulder – Implements from LMU Munich’s historical veterinary collection”, visitors can gain an insight into veterinary practice and everyday life in years gone by. The exhibition will display selected gems from LMU’s jealously guarded collection of historical veterinary objects.
