Pas de deux, “Couple disappears / Image freezes”. Doris Runge’s latest book of verse, von liebe viel (A Lot About Love; published by Wallstein, 2023), is a collection of images frozen in time, distilled from 40 years of the author’s eloquent grapplings with love, the forms it can take and the milieu that surrounds it.

It is the “promise of a secret relationship for which love is not an inapposite word”, to quote Heinrich Detering in the volume’s epilogue. Detering emphasizes the centrality of love poetry in Runge’s oeuvre. Words are the mold into which she pours moments of love – including the moments before, afterward and in-between. Everything is always in motion: “Don’t stand still / Turn the page”.

Highlights of the evening also touch on Runge’s earlier volumes: die schönsten versprechen (The Most Beautiful Promises; 2022) and man könnte sich ins blau verlieben (One Could Fall In Love With Blue; 2017).

Doris Runge, born in Carlow in 1943, has won a series of awards as a poet and author. She is President of Literatur im Weissen Haus (Literature in the White House) in the north German town of Cismar.

Heinrich Detering (moderation), born in Neumünster in 1959, is a literary scholar, lyricist and essayist and was recently appointed to the order Pour le mérite for science and the arts. He was a regular feature of the Lyrical Quartet discussions in Munich from 2011-2015.
