Michael Krüger – born on 9 December 1943, writer and poet, publisher, translator, for many years head of the Carl Hanser publishing house and later President of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, among other posts – is a poet of encounter, of the surprise meeting. And, as the concluding cycle in his book Einmal einfach (Simple For Once) announces, he is a poet of “missed opportunities”.

When his verses cast their glance upon “the herd of stones in the wet grass”, when “the backs of black beetles glimmer on the way to a funeral”, when the “shrub in my garden” suddenly appears in a different light, then these encounters embody more than just the self-revelation of a world of ceaseless rediscovery. Understanding an encounter as a match, a game, a chance meeting, they also open up a playful poetic space in which the unexpected, the never suspected, has room to unfold.

Published to mark his 80th birthday, Krüger’s Verabredungen mit Dichtern. Erinnerungen und Begegnungen (Rendezvous with Poets. Recollections and Encounters) shares the same concept even in its title. Lyrik Kabinett sends its heartfelt congratulations to Michael Krüger, a friend and companion who for many years chaired our board of trustees.

In this evening’s discussion with literary critic Christian Metz – Professor of German Studies at RWTH Aachen University – Krüger will recite poems from various phases of his work, up to and including his most recent publications.

With the kind support of Bayern liest e.V. (Bavaria Reads).
