A revolutionary artist who pushed back the boundaries of landscape painting and paved the way to modernism: Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) perceived nature in a new way, reducing landscapes to color, light and atmosphere. His works still beguile and enchant to this day. Thanks to a cooperative arrangement with the Tate Britain in London, Munich’s Lenbachhaus is currently privileged to be showcasing paintings, watercolors and sketches from all of the artist’s creative phases. The exhibition thus makes his development over time and his artistic innovations uniquely accessible.
At this event, Karin Althaus, curator of the exhibition, and Tobias Döring will discuss literary aspects of Turner’s work. Focusing on the artist’s maritime work Entrance of the Meuse; Orange-Merchant on the Bar, Going to Pieces, they will explore the esthetics of the sublime and the role it plays in word and picture. Another focus will be on how Turner’s paintings – and especially the motive of the shipwreck – have inspired poets to tackle this subject matter.
Karin Althaus is Collection Manager at the Lenbachhaus, where she has curated numerous exhibitions on the 19th and early 20th centuries. Tobias Döring lectures in English literature at LMU Munich.
