A Broadway fairy tale comes to Munich’s Prinzregententheater. Celebrated stage director Philipp Moschitz uses up-tempo slapstick to project Once Upon a Mattress into the here and now. The modern parody of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea, composed by Mary Rodgers, premiered on Broadway in 1959.

“No one may wed ’till the prince shares his wedding bed”. In vain, the citizens of a distant kingdom therefore strive to find a ‘true’ princess for Prince Dauntless. Yet nobody is able to satisfy the absurd and unrealistic demands of the Queen Mother – until Princess Winnifred turns up. This resolute young lady breaks with conventions and wins the hearts of the locals. Together, they raise their voice and outsmart the scheming queen.
