In this event a vibrant group of scholars will gather at LMU Munich to explore travel and travellers in the Ottoman Empire. From monks journeying to and from Mount Sinai, to a Syrian merchant navigating Istanbul, to those who established a French quarter in Cairo, these papers trace the footsteps of travellers through correspondence, manuscripts, printed books, notebooks, entire libraries – as well as wall paintings and other architectural features. The participants will encounter those who returned home, those who never did, and others who redefined “home” through their back-and-forth journeys. All are welcome.
