Over the course of 3 days, the Public Health Film Festival will present films dealing with mental health, nutrition and planetary health. The program will also feature online discussions with experts on the topics dealt with in the films.
Public Health is "the art and science of disease prevention, health maintenance and the prolongation of lifespan by means of the organized efforts of the whole of society" (WHO, 1988).
The Film Festival hopes to encourage viewers to participate in debates on current themes in public health, using film as a medium to illustrate the issues, followed by discussions with a panel of experts.
One of the films on the program, "El Susto" (2019), will have its German premiere during the festival. Following presentation of the film, its director Karen Akins will discuss the effects of sugar-laced soft drinks, the commercial determinants of health and the influence of lobbying activities with invited specialists in public health.
The Public Health Film Festival (PHFF) is financially supported by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and the Conference of University Rectors, as part of the initiative "Minor Subjects: Evidently Innovative!“. The PHFF is organized by junior researchers at LMU's Pettenkofer School of Public Health.
