Spectrums of the Violent Imagination in Poetry

Opening hours / Beginning:

Tue:
1:00 pm - 4:30 pm

29 July 2025

Venue:

Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) Seestraße 13 80802 München

Workshop led by Dr. Nikolina Hatton (CAS Researcher in Residence/LMU).

The workshop focuses on several poems across literary periods that thematize the desire for retribution and violence as a response to perceived injustice on the part of the speaker. A central question is whether poetry (or a specific poem) engages in politics directly or should be seen instead as an affective outlet for the speaker. In exploring a wide range of poetry written in diverse political contexts, discussants will consider continuities as well as potential classifications for the use of the violent imagination in poetry.

Participants include: Irmtraud Huber (Konstanz), Kevin Killeen (CAS Fellow/University of York), Erin Murphy (CAS Fellow/Boston University).

Nikolina Hatton is CAS Researcher in Residence during the summer semester 2025.

A registration is required. You can find more information and the complete conference program on the CAS website.
