How did letter-writers in early medieval Egypt formulate a request for help? How did they present their case and their situation? What sentiments did they convey through their letters explicitly and implicitly through the language, descriptions, arguments and expressions they used? Using a sample of unpublished Arabic letters, Petra Sijpesteijn examines how language and content were most effectively employed. She thus gains exciting insights into the values of patronage, protection, governance, and social responsibility.
