Of newspapers and travel guides: The works of Egypt’s Muhammed Safa Bey in late Ottoman Istanbul
As a young journalist fleeing from criminal proceedings, Muhammed Safa Bey reached the Ottoman capital for the first time in 1896. After 1908, when the Ottoman constitution was reinstated, he returned from Egypt to the Bosphorus, where he published the Arabic-Ottoman newspaper al-ʿAdl. Less well known are his various writings. In particular, a travel guide for Arabs visiting Istanbul is interesting from a number of angles.
Tonight’s lecture outlines the biography and works of the Egyptian intellectual, while also evoking his own personal view of the city.
The lecture will be presented by Dr. Sabine Prätor (University of Münster) as part of the series Basics of Islam: Personalities organized by the Münchner Mittelost-Mittelmeer-Mittelasien-Zentrum (4MZ, Munich Middle East Mediterranean Central Asia Center).
