Donald B. Dingwell, Professor of Experimental Volcanology and Chair of Mineralogy and Petrology at LMU, has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada/Ordre du Canada, the highest civil honor accorded to citizens of the country.

The Order of Canada is Canada‘s highest civilian honor and is awarded “in recognition of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation” to persons who, in accordance with the Order’s Latin motto Desiderantes melioram patriam, strive to better their country.
Donald Dingwell becomes an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the study of volcanology, and for his leadership in promoting science and research in the formation of international public policy.
Individuals are nominated by members of the general public and are appointed to one of the Order’s three ranks – Members, Officers and Companions – by the Governor General of Canada, on the basis of recommendations made by an independent Advisory Council chaired by country’s Chief Justice. The latest list of awardees includes 38 Officers, two of whom work abroad.The Order was instituted on July 1, 1967, the centennial of the formation of the Dominion of Canada.
As an Officer of the Order, Dingwell becomes one of the approximately 2000 Canadian citizens who have received the honor since its institution in 1967.
