LMU best placed German university

26 Sept 2018

In the World University Ranking 2019 issued by the weekly magazine Times Higher Education (THE), LMU takes the 32nd slot, and is again the highest placed German university. This is two places higher than its position in the previous listing, a rise which the THE attributes to improvements in the core areas of teaching and research. LMU is now ranked 8th in Europe as a whole, and second in continental Europe behind the ETH Zürich.

This year’s edition of the annual THE ranking encompasses 1250 institutions of Higher Education in 86 countries, and is led by British and American universities.

The THE World University Ranking is based primarily on the evaluation of teaching, research and citation frequency. The ranking methodology makes use of 13 performance indicators. Since 2015, the citation data used by the THE have been compiled in cooperation with Elsevier (Scopus).

This year, LMU has also done well in three other rankings. In the Shanghai Ranking, LMU improved its position by four places. In the Nature Index 2018, which is based on an institution’s publication record in the world’s leading journals devoted to the natural sciences, LMU is the only German university in the Top 50. And in the latest QS World University Ranking 2019 LMU has also made four places good in comparison to last year’s list, and is now placed 62nd.
