Professor Heiner Igel appointed AGU Fellow

17 Oct 2025

The seismologist now belongs to a select group of outstanding researchers who shape the work of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in important ways.

“I feel very honored to be elected as an AGU Fellow – and especially with the recognition of our commitment to new fields and network building in seismology,” says a delighted Heiner Igel. “As such, I would like to share this honor with my research group and with national and international colleagues who collaborated in these endeavors.”

Heiner Igel is highly regarded as one of the world’s leading seismologists. His main research interests include the numerical modeling of seismic waves and the further development of innovative methods and instruments, with applications in fields ranging from earthquake physics and earthquake hazards to planetary seismology.

Furthermore, he played a major role in cultivating networks within the seismological research landscape and introduced new interdisciplinary approaches to the discipline. Through his work, he and his group are helping advance the science of seismology on technological and methodological fronts.

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is one of the world’s most preeminent scientific associations in the domain of Earth and space sciences. Through its AGU Fellow program, the research community honors outstanding researchers whose scientific contributions have substantially advanced our understanding of geophysical processes.

Being made an AGU Fellow is a rare honor, which is granted to just a small number of outstanding scientists worldwide every year. Professor Igel’s election is the first time in seven years that a German seismologist has received this award, underscoring the international visibility and scientific importance of his work. AGU Fellows act as external experts, capable of advising government agencies and other organizations outside the sciences upon request.
