The M1 Munich Medicine Alliance marks an important step in the further development of top-class medicine in Munich. LMU and LMU University Hospital are members of the strategic partnership.
Five partners – one overarching goal: The mission of the M1 Munich Medicine Alliance is to promote science, research, and innovation and make Munich visible internationally as a locus of medical excellence. “Together,” so the slogan goes, “we are making advances in research and healthcare.” LMU Munich, the Technical University of Munich (TUM), LMU University Hospital, TUM University Hospital, and Helmholtz Munich have teamed up for the strategic alliance. The new collaboration officially launches this week with an opening ceremony and a symposium.
The alliance, which is funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Science as part of its Highmed Agenda Bavaria, is seeking to advance elite-level medical research and the translation of scientific findings into patient care. As its program declares, it will strive to “further expand the interdisciplinary interfaces between medicine, technology, and IT and effectively integrate knowledge and technologies into patient care.”
“The M1 Munich Medicine Alliance brings together the first-class medical faculties, university clinics, and other outstanding biomedical research institutions in Munich with the goal of strengthening the translation of scientific findings in particular. University medicine is one of the poster children of LMU and I’m delighted this alliance will give Munich another major boost nationally and internationally as a site of medical excellence,” says LMU President Prof. Bernd Huber. “I wish everyone involved in the enterprise a fair wind and much success!”
Prof. Matthias Tschöp, CEO and Scientific Director of Helmholtz Munich and President-elect of LMU, notes: “With the M1 alliance, Munich is taking the lead in Germany. This collaboration between the most important actors in the medical sphere, from health research to university hospitals, will unlock huge synergies and thus potential for medical research. Everyone stands to benefit – the partners, industry, and patients.”

“The M1 Munich Medicine Alliance is a first step for the research institutions and university hospitals in Munich to collectively make better use of their potential. When it comes to the use of health data for research in particular, and to the planning and implementation of clinical studies, we have the opportunity to become the contact partner of choice in Germany and Europe,” says Prof. Markus M. Lerch, Medical Director and CEO of LMU University Hospital and member of the M1 Executive Board.
Prof. Thomas Gudermann, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at LMU and Chair of the Executive Board of M1, adds: “The strategic association of the five partners in the M1 Munich Medicine Alliance will tap a scientific potential that is unparalleled in Europe and indeed internationally. This lays the foundation for groundbreaking innovations in the treatment of our patients.”
