Two LMU Faculty Members Receive Award from the Free State of Bavaria

Olivia Merkel and Klaus M. Schmidt have been awarded the prestigious “2025 Prize for Excellence in Teaching.”

Professor Olivia Merkel from the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy impressed the jury with her particularly clear and practical teaching of complex topics in pharmaceutical technology. Her teaching combines academic excellence with innovative pedagogical concepts and modern equipment. Through interactive lectures, research-based learning, and the integration of current topics such as nano-RNA delivery and artificial intelligence, she succeeds in actively engaging students and inspiring them in the long term. In addition, she creates an open and appreciative learning atmosphere and promotes the exchange between science and practice, for example through collaborations with industry.

Professor Klaus M. Schmidt of the School of Economics is being honored for his many years of outstanding teaching. His courses, ranging from introductory to advanced levels—such as “Game Theory”—are characterized by didactic clarity, interactive instruction, and a lively culture of discussion. Using vivid examples and clear explanations, he succeeds in making even complex economic concepts accessible. Students particularly highlight his motivating and humorous style. As an internationally renowned researcher, Schmidt has shaped teaching at LMU and inspired generations of students.

The “Award for Good Teaching” is presented annually to recognize outstanding dedication and innovative concepts in higher education in Bavaria. The award underscores the high quality of teaching at LMU and the special importance of dedicated faculty members for academic success.
